چکیده

A new generation of current and wave testing tanks is required to simulate more realistic sea conditions at larger scales. One means of producing a current is by using groups of impellers arranged around the perimeter of a circular tank. Each propeller produces a single flow velocity which may be different to its neighbours. These differences can lead to a stepped or curved plan view velocity profile in the test section of the tank where a plug profile is required. It is important to understand what the maximum allowable velocity difference between each impeller can be before the required plug profile in the test section is

The Effect of Vertical Mixing on the Atlantic Water Layer Circulation in the Arctic Ocean

An ice-ocean model has been used to investigate the effect of vertical mixing on the circulation of the Atlantic Water layer (AL) in the Arctic Ocean. The motivation of this study comes from the disparate AL circulations in the various models that comprise the Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison Project (AOMIP). It is found that varying vertical mixing significantly changes the ocean’s stratific...

Observations of turbulence - induced new particle formation in the residual layer

Aerosol particle measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer performed by a helicopter-borne measurement payload and by a lidar system from a case study during the IMPACT field campaign in Cabauw (NL) are presented. Layers of increased number concentrations of ultrafine particles were observed in the residual layer, indicating relatively recent new-particle formation. These layers were chara...

Iterative Solutions to the Steady-state Axisymmetric Boundary-layer Equations under an Intense Pressure Gradient

Steady-state solutions to the complete axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations are obtained by an iterative technique for an intense pressure-gradient force representative of the tropical cyclone. Solutions for the horizontal and vertical components of motion are compared for various horizontal and vertical mixing coefficients, drag coefficients, and Coriolis parameters. A multilevel model is used...

Evolution of a stratified rotating shear layer with horizontal shear. Part 2. Nonlinear evolution

Direct numerical simulation is used to investigate the nonlinear evolution of a horizontally oriented mixing layer with uniform stable stratification and coordinate system rotation about the vertical axis. The important dimensional parameters governing inviscid dynamics are maximum shear S(t), buoyancy frequency N, angular velocity of rotation Ω and characteristic shear thickness L(t). The effe...

Vertical Eddy Mixing in the Tropical Upper Ocean: Its Influence on Zonal Currents

In this study, the authors explore how vertical-mixing parameterizations influence the structure of zonal currents in the eastern equatorial Pacific using an isopycnal ocean model that contains an explicit surface mixed layer. The mixing parameterizations considered are the schemes that depend on the Richardson number (Ri). One of the schemes (the Step scheme) consists of high (nc) and low (nb)...
